I have drifted like a tumbleweed across the western hills of the American musical landscape for decades. Scattering song like seeds thrown carelessly over the field, it surprises me from time to time when one of them comes back to me sung by someone I've haven't met yet. I never gave a damn about getting rich or famous and pity those who do especially those folks who work so hard and wind up with nothing. I pretty much wound up with nothing but at least I didn't work hard for it!
I began this journey in the shadow of the state prison in Florence, Arizona. By the time I began to be aware of the process of having memories to keep for myself, both my parents were incarcerated. Taken in by my grandmother I set out down the road that would take me to the homes of six or seven different families, for better or not, for the first 15 years of life. In my mind most of these people stand out as heroic for their courage in the face of long odds. I didn't make it easy for any of them and owe them all a debt that I can only repay by being willing to stand in for others who need it.
